Fall is one of the best times to explore Europe’s stunning castles. The cooler weather and fewer crowds create the perfect environment for leisurely visits, allowing you to soak up the history and beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season.
Each castle has its own unique charm in the fall, the changing colors providing a stunning contrast to the stone walls and turrets, making every visit feel like a step back in time. Some castles even become more atmospheric, with misty mornings and golden sunsets that add a touch of magic to your visit.
Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle is already a must-see, but it becomes truly magical in the fall. The best time to visit is between late September and mid-October when the trees around the castle are at their most vibrant. The cooler weather also makes exploring the surrounding trails leading to iconic viewpoints, like Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge), more enjoyable.
Even though it’s still popular, the smaller off-season crowds give you the chance to really take in the castle’s grandeur without the rush of peak tourist season.
Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland
Eilean Donan Castle is one of Scotland’s most photographed sites. The castle’s location, perched on an island where three sea lochs meet, is breathtaking at any time of year, but the autumn foliage that surrounds the hills makes the scene even more captivating.
The Scottish Highlands in early to mid-October are one of my favorite places to go. I would recommend spending your time outside the castle enjoying the grounds. If you’re lucky, you might catch a misty morning where the castle emerges through the fog.
Château de Chambord, France
With over 13,000 acres of forests, the grounds of Château de Chambord explode into a spectrum of autumn colors from late October to early November. A walk through the vast estate during this time feels like stepping into another world, with deer and wild boar occasionally spotted amidst the foliage.
The château’s intricate architecture is not to be missed, with its iconic double helix staircase, which can be explored at your leisure without the summer crowds.
Bran Castle, Romania
Bran Castle, famously linked to the Dracula legend, feels even more mystical in the fall. Visiting during the autumn, especially around Halloween, is an atmospheric experience, as the gothic architecture stands in stark contrast to the warm hues of the season.
Outside, the Carpathian forests feel alive with the changing season, offering great hiking trails with spectacular views of both the castle and the surrounding valleys.
Hohenzollern Castle, Germany
Hohenzollern Castle sitting atop Mount Hohenzollern is a sight to behold at any time of year but early to mid-October is the ideal time to visit, as the vibrant fall colors spread across the Swabian Alps. The castle appears to float above a sea of fiery red and orange trees, making it a dream destination for photographers and history lovers alike.
Inside, the castle’s rich interiors offer a warm refuge, with fascinating exhibits on the Hohenzollern dynasty’s history.
Bled Castle, Slovenia
Bled Castle’s location on a cliff overlooking the serene Lake Bled makes it one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. From the castle, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the autumn foliage, the island church in the middle of the lake, and the snow-capped Julian Alps in the distance.
Inside, the museum offers fascinating insights into Slovenia’s history, while the castle restaurant serves up delicious local dishes—perfect for warming up on a crisp fall day.
Alcázar of Segovia, Spain
The Alcázar of Segovia, with its soaring towers some say inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella’s Castle. I was there in mid-November and felt like it was the perfect time to visit with the gorgeous autumn landscape and the smaller crowds.
Make sure to spend some time in Segovia as fall brings a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere to the town. You can explore the narrow, cobbled streets and check out the impressive Roman aqueduct.
Castle Howard, England
Located in the heart of Yorkshire, mid to late October is the ideal time to visit Castle Howard, when the castle’s gardens and surrounding woodlands are ablaze with autumn colors.
You can explore the extensive grounds, with their winding paths and hidden statues, as well as the nearby woodlands, which are particularly magical in the autumn light.
Burg Eltz, Germany
Burg Eltz’s (Eltz Castle) secluded location deep within a forest makes it a hidden gem, and autumn is the best time to visit this medieval masterpiece. The autumn colors as you walk up to Burg Eltz make it feel like you’re going through a storybook, with the quiet path adding to the castle’s secluded charm.

Château de Chillon, Switzerland
Château de Chillon’s location on the shores of Lake Geneva makes it one of Switzerland’s most iconic castles. Late September to mid-October is the best time to visit, as the reflections of the castle in the lake, framed by the vibrant colors of the season, make for a breathtaking scene.
Autumn offers a more peaceful experience at the Chateau, with the summer tourists gone and the crisp air making it a perfect time to explore the castle’s historic rooms and dungeons.
