Rome is a city bursting with history, culture, and countless must-see landmarks. But not every spot lives up to the hype. If you’re planning a trip to the Eternal City, you’ll want to avoid the tourist traps that can leave you feeling like you’re wasting your time.
After having been to Rome a few times now, I’ve compiled a list of 10 overrated places you can skip. These are the places that aren’t worth the time or effort. Instead, focus on the hidden gems and authentic experiences that will make your Roman holiday truly unforgettable.
1. The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps are often overcrowded with tourists and street vendors. While the view from the top is nice, the experience can be underwhelming compared to other landmarks. Save your time and energy for more unique and less crowded spots like The Orange Garden, or Giardino degli Aranci, which offers stunning views of Rome.
The panoramic view from the terrace is particularly breathtaking, especially at sunset. Plus, you can explore the nearby Aventine Keyhole for a unique and charming perspective of St. Peter’s Basilica.
2. The Trevi Fountain
Yes, it’s iconic, but the Trevi Fountain is perpetually packed with tourists trying to get that perfect photo. The crowded atmosphere can make it difficult to enjoy the beauty of the fountain. Consider visiting lesser-known but equally stunning fountains around the city.
For a less crowded yet equally stunning fountain experience, visit the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, also known as “Il Fontanone” (the Big Fountain). Located on the Janiculum Hill, this grandiose baroque fountain offers a peaceful setting with spectacular views of Rome.
3. Via del Corso
This busy shopping street is filled with chain stores you can find anywhere. Instead, explore local markets like Campo de’ Fiori Market and boutiques in Rome’s charming neighborhoods for a more authentic shopping experience.
4. Hard Rock Cafe Rome
This international chain restaurant lacks the local charm and authentic cuisine you should be experiencing in Rome. Opt for a traditional trattoria or osteria to savor genuine Italian flavors.
5. Piazza Venezia
Piazza Venezia is often bustling with traffic and offers limited attractions compared to other piazzas. Instead, visit Piazza Navona (my personal favorite) for a more pleasant and historical experience.
6. Via dei Condotti
Known for its luxury boutiques, Via dei Condotti can be skipped if you’re not interested in high-end shopping. Wander through Rome’s quaint streets and discover local artisans and unique shops instead.
7. Via Veneto
This famous street has lost much of its old glamour and is now mostly filled with overpriced restaurants and hotels. Instead, dine in the Trastevere neighborhood for a lively atmosphere and delicious food.
8. The Mouth of Truth
The Mouth of Truth, or Bocca della Verità, often has long lines and isn’t as exciting as other Roman landmarks. You can skip the wait and enjoy more enriching experiences at places like the Pantheon or the Capitoline Museums.
9. Vatican Museums (Peak Times)
The Vatican Museums are incredible but can be unbearably crowded. If you must visit, try to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Otherwise, explore lesser-known churches and museums around Rome that offer peace and beauty without the crowds.
If possible, plan your trip to Rome in the off season. Not only will the Vatican be practically empty but Rome itself will be much for manageable.
10. St. Peter’s Basilica Dome
Climbing to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica offers great views, but the wait and the climb can be exhausting. For stunning panoramic views with less hassle, head to the Gianicolo Hill or go to the top of the Altare della Patria in it’s glass elevator.
